Four Ways to Add Meaning to the Holiday Season

Many folks eagerly anticipate this time of year, but the holiday season can also bring feelings of stress and anxiety. For those who aren’t particularly religious, it can be difficult to find meaning amid all the shopping, eating and traveling.

Here are a few ways to give back to the community — and perhaps start a new tradition — in the month of December:

Make a financial gift to an organization you care about. Many nonprofits rely on year-end donations for day-to-day expenses or to expand their offerings in the coming year. If you’re able to contribute, visit the Washington Gives website to find an organization you’d like to support.

Shop local and support BIPOC-owned businesses. Skip the big box stores and major retailers this year and check out The Evergrey’s comprehensive guide to Seattle-made gifts. Prefer to give experiences instead of things? Browse Intentionalist’s gift certificate marketplace and treat the recipient to a night out or tasty takeout meal.

Stop by a holiday market. ‘Tis the season for supporting local makers and artisans. A few upcoming shopping opportunities to add to your calendar: HeartfeltRootz Makers Market (Dec. 11-12), Africatown Soul Holiday Market (Dec. 12), Peace Peloton Night Market (Dec. 18), Daybreak Star Native Art Market (Dec. 18-19).

Start a new volunteering habit. The holidays are a great time to give back, but volunteers are needed all year ‘round. Seattle Works and United Way King County are two great ways to find opportunities that you can sign up for now and continue in 2022.
